Good In the Midst of Bad

The inner city of Chicago can be a scary place.  For example, there is a lot of bad – gangs, shootings, murders, homelessness, poverty, and the list goes on and on.  However, there are also some good things happening at Ms. Pearl’s Good News Day Care.  Ms. Pearl provides hope to the Roseland community of Chicago, Illinois. Our church partners with this ministry, and two months ago, our church sent a team to serve at the center (read more about this trip). While serving the community that day, Ms. Pearl shared about a family who was caring for 9 children and needed significant help with remodeling their home.

Our team asked me if The Village could help. I thought it might be a good job for our men’s group to take on, so I called one of our group leaders and asked if we could take a ride to Roseland to check out this project.  We took that ride and our leader, Jose Marrero, went into action. He called some guys, got tools, and made a list of what supplies were needed. Then last Saturday, May 20th, we took our first trip to help.  Jose recruited guys who knew how to drywall.  One guy, Angel,  was flat out brilliant! It was amazing to watch him work! I’ve never seen a guy make cuts so quickly and efficiently!

What The Body of Christ Looks Like

Those who know me well, know that I can’t be trusted to do anything around a house.  I make it worse instead of better.  So my role was to hang out with the family,  provide encouragement and prayers, and pick up lunch for everyone.  As I watched all of our guys work, I just thought to myself, this is what the body of Christ looks like. People with different gifts and talents, none of these gifts by the way that I have, all being used for the glory of God.

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.   Ephesians 2:10

“Handiwork” in the verse above is literally translated “Masterpiece”.  God doesn’t just want your life to be one or two good things here or there.  He wants to use your gifts, your talents for something significant! You are brilliant, and he wants to use you to make a masterpiece!

We plan on making some more trips in June to continue the remodel.  If you know how to drywall, do floors, or cabinets, please contact Jose.

If you have a specific gift or talent…USE IT! If you need help finding a way to use it, give me a call (815-467-2265)!

Here’s what I know…People are Brilliant!  You can do things I’ll never do at a level of excellence I can only dream about.  Let’s find a way to use your talents for the glory of God!
